The Mercury Battery Problem: What to Put in an Old Camera Now

You've got a camera from the 1970s, the meter needle doesn't move, and the manual asks for a battery nobody sells. This is one of the most common reasons people think a vintage camera is broken when it isn't.

Short answer

Many cameras of that era were designed around mercury cells — the PX625 and its relatives — which supplied 1.35 volts. Mercury batteries were phased out for environmental reasons and are no longer manufactured.

Replacements exist in the same physical size, but most modern cells are 1.5 volts or higher, and that difference can make the meter read incorrectly. There are four common ways around it, and one of them is simply not to use the built-in meter at all.

Also worth knowing before you panic: on many cameras of this period, the battery powers only the meter. The shutter is mechanical and the camera will shoot perfectly well with no battery in it.

Why voltage matters more than size

The physical size is the easy part — same-size replacements are sold everywhere.

The difficulty is that a mercury cell held a remarkably steady 1.35V for almost its whole life, then dropped off at the end. Meters of the era were calibrated against that flat, predictable voltage.

Modern alkaline cells start higher and drift downward as they discharge, so even if the reading is right today it may not be next month. Silver oxide cells hold their voltage steadily, which is better, but they hold it at around 1.55V rather than 1.35V.

How much that actually shifts your exposure depends on the camera. Some designs are more tolerant than others, and a few were built to be largely voltage-independent. It's frequently described as being in the region of half a stop to a stop — but it isn't a fixed number, and it doesn't necessarily stay the same across the whole range of light. Treat it as something to test on your camera rather than a correction to apply blindly.

The four usual solutions

1. Zinc-air hearing aid cells. These run at roughly the voltage mercury cells did, so the meter behaves close to how it was designed to. The catch is life: they start discharging once you peel the sticker off and let air in, so they last weeks to months rather than years. Cheap, and popular with people who shoot regularly. Some need a spacer ring to fit properly.

2. An adapter with a voltage-reducing circuit. A small adapter that takes a common modern cell and drops the voltage to about 1.35V. It costs more up front, then uses ordinary batteries you can buy anywhere. This is the "set it and forget it" option.

3. A silver oxide cell, and compensate. Fit a same-size 1.55V silver oxide cell and adjust for the error — usually by setting the film speed dial slightly differently from the actual film. It's free and it works, as long as you've tested how far out your particular camera reads. The weakness is that the error may not be uniform in all light.

4. Ignore the meter. Use a handheld meter, a phone app, or the sunny 16 rule, and treat the camera as fully mechanical. Plenty of people shoot vintage cameras this way permanently, and negative film is forgiving of small errors.

There's also a fifth option for a camera you intend to keep: a technician can recalibrate the meter for a modern cell. That's a service job, not a purchase.

Before you blame the battery

If the meter is dead, check these first — they're more common than people expect:

  • Corrosion in the battery compartment. An old cell left inside can leak and leave a crust on the contacts. A dead meter is often just a bad connection.
  • The battery check function. Many cameras have a dedicated battery check button or switch. Try it before assuming the meter itself is at fault.
  • A meter switch you haven't found. On some cameras the meter only wakes when the film advance lever is pulled out slightly, or when a switch on the top plate is moved.
  • The battery orientation. Sounds obvious; it catches everyone at least once.

What to look at when buying

  • Ask about the battery compartment. Corrosion is the thing that turns a meter problem into a repair problem, and it's easy to photograph. A seller who has looked will be able to tell you.
  • Check whether the shutter is mechanical. If it is, a meter issue is an inconvenience. If the shutter itself is electronic, a power problem stops the camera working at all.
  • Don't read "meter not working" as "broken camera." Sometimes it means exactly that. Often it means the previous owner couldn't find the right battery either.
