Cable Releases and Remote Cords: Which One Does Your Camera Take?

A cable release is the simplest accessory in photography and one of the most confusing to shop for, because two completely different things are sold under similar names.
Short answer
- A threaded hole in or around the shutter button — your camera takes a mechanical cable release. These screw in, and most mechanical cameras share a common thread, so a plain release will usually fit.
- No threaded hole, but a socket or port on the body — your camera takes an electronic remote cord. These are specific to the maker and often to the model, so the connector has to match.
Look at the shutter button first. That one glance decides which half of the shop you're shopping in.
Mechanical cable releases
Inside the sheath is a stiff wire. Pressing the plunger pushes the wire out of the tip, and that tip presses the shutter button from the inside. No electricity, nothing to go flat, and a design that has barely changed in a century.
Two reasons people use them:
- No shake. Your hand never touches the camera, which matters for long exposures and macro work.
- Long exposures. Many releases have a locking collar you can screw down to hold the plunger in, so a bulb exposure stays open without you standing there pressing it.
Most mechanical cameras use the same standard thread, which is why a generic release from any maker will normally fit any of them. A few systems used something different, or put the socket somewhere unexpected. If a release won't start threading with light finger pressure, don't force it — check the camera's manual instead.
Where the socket hides
It isn't always in the shutter button. Common places:
- In the centre of the shutter button — the usual arrangement.
- In a collar around the shutter button.
- On the front of the body, often near the lens mount.
- On the shutter housing of the lens itself — normal on leaf-shutter cameras, where the shutter lives in the lens rather than the body.
Some cameras need a small adapter before they'll accept a standard release. If your camera has no obvious threaded hole anywhere, that's worth checking before concluding it can't use one.
What to check on a used mechanical release
- The wire comes out far enough. Press the plunger fully and look at the tip. If the pin barely emerges, it may not have enough travel to trip your shutter.
- Smooth action. It should push and return cleanly. Gritty or sticky movement usually means old grease or a kinked wire inside.
- Kinks in the sheath. A sharp bend anywhere in the cable makes the action stiff and can eventually break the wire.
- The threaded tip. Same as any thread — flattened or chewed means trouble.
- The lock, if it has one. Screw it down and check that it actually holds the plunger in.
- Length. Short ones (around 20–30cm) are neat for tripod work; long ones let you stand away from the camera.
Electronic remote cords
Later cameras replaced the mechanical socket with an electrical one. Pressing the button on the cord closes a circuit rather than pushing a pin.
The important difference for buyers: there is no universal standard here. Connectors vary by maker and often by generation, and a cord that physically plugs in isn't necessarily built for that camera. What to check on a used one:
- The connector. Compare shape, size and pin arrangement against your camera's socket. Similar is not the same.
- The cable near both ends. This is where internal breaks happen, and a break inside the insulation is invisible. Flex it gently and look for stiffness or cracking.
- Corrosion on the contacts.
- Whether it has been tested. With electronics, "untested" is a meaningful difference from "working" — an internal break gives no outward sign at all.
Which do you actually need?
If your camera is mechanical and takes a threaded release, a plain mechanical one is cheap, robust and will outlive the camera. There's rarely a reason to buy anything fancy.
If your camera is electronic, you're buying a specific part for a specific model, and the condition of the cable matters more than anything else about it.
